i have a birthmark on my lower back on the left side, right before where my jeans and underwear start. it's about as big as my fist, and it looks like cloud with a little lightning bolt coming out of it. i think it would be considered a "port-wine-stain" because it is red. i'm 14 years old, and i think i'm pretty cute. but this birthmark makes me so so so self conscious. and i love the beach, but i never wear a bikini because i'm afraid people will make fun of my birthmark. i love bikinis though. i go to a private school and i don't think my parents will put out the money to remove it. it makes me really unhappy. how much is it, and is there anything else i can do to remove it?

I have a port wine birthmark myself on the back of my upper arm about half the size of my fist so I know exactly how you feel about being self conscious.

I do believe what the others say above, but the fact to the matter is you want to have it removed so you can feel "whole" and just be at peace with who you are and what you want to be. Accepting yourself plays an important part of being confident and having others accept you. Be strong for yourself and know that there is nothing wrong about you!

If having your birthmark is hindering your confidence and perhaps your feeling of participating in activities, etc., you should talk to your parents about it and see if they will make an appointment with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon for a consultation. In my experience in having my birthmark removed has been excellent! My consultation was free. Most Doctors won't charge for a consultation so find out the fees before making the appointment. If they do charge for the consultation, the fee is usually used against the treatment. Do your research about lasers and doctors. Also, it is a laser treatment and not surgery. The cost of the treatments in having my birthmark removed started out at $80 per treatment and now it's $50. My doctor charges on the size and darkness of the area being treated. The smaller the size and the lighter the color gets, the cost goes down. The laser treatment is less than 10 minutes and I get it done once a month. My doctor has been using a Pulsed Dye Laser on me and it has been fantastic. The only thing is that since it is getting very light the laser has not been as effective as when I first started, but still getting lighter. Make sure you apply sunscreen with the highest spf when you go to the beach on your birthmark so it doesn't get darker.

Good Luck and I hope this information has helped!!!

I think you are putting too much stock into what others think. Anyone that sees it would be smart enough to figure out that you were born with it. Also - from what you descibe it sounds kind of cool - it makes you special. Anyway, if you are that worried about it maybe you could get a tattoo that encompasses it - that seems to be the rage nowadays. I don't think you can remove that type birthmark with laser.

Nothing you can do for now. Even if you raised the money on your own you still need your parents permission.

If your friends make fun of it then maybe they're not your friend at all.
